For experimental media, we were told to make an experimental video and make a presentation on it further describing what the topics behind were.
My video comprised of three acts, below are the synopsis of each act
Act 1:
The first act comprises of a person that is going through Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He is shown craving for attention throughout the act. He is seen sitting still and feeling numb when the people around him are laughing and playing, he is seen taking the help of cigarettes and alcohol just to get over the feeling of being unwanted. He is running in need of attention and finally falls on the ground when everything he is doing is going in-vain. He lays helpless realising how far gone he is. Watching someone slowly lose interest in you and knowing they’re also making a mistake, really does hurt. The song that I chose for the background is “ATTENTION BY: JOJI”. It is a song that was made for the people who go through ADHD. It focuses on the fact how people crave attention. The lyrics match the things that have been going on in the back of the head of the person going through all of that. The first act ends with an onscreen text, that says
“I don’t wanna die so young, have got so much to do”
This basically entails everything the person who is going through it is feeling & he is so deep into it that he is thinking about death and how he does not want to do die at an age this fragile.
ACT 2:
Act 2 comprises of a television that was used in the 90’s and a few clips that are transformed into it showing that the things written on it and showing in it are things people have been feeling and saying since a long time. I wrote mostly everything that is showing off the contrasting ideas that plague our society. I have written everything on the television, while the video plays in the background. Writing things like, XENOphobia, Homophobia, hate, cultural racism etc are constraints that have left a very huge mark on people. The main purpose of writing them on the television screen was to catch attention of the people watching the experimental film and make them realise how all of the things mentioned make people suffer so much. These are things that are outside our comfort zone, things that none of us want or deserve to feel.
The song that I used in the background is: WASH US IN THE BLOOD BY KANYE WEST. It is non-secular music which found a way to combine this choice with his unapologetic style. The message behind the track also gives listeners an important reminder that Black people, like Kanye West, are actively suffering at the hands of oppression in America. It basically deals with Colour and cultural racism. It was a perfect single for me to use in order to shed light on the topics that I was discussing.
ACT 3:
Act 3 consists of a person who has gone through one of the many constraints of the society. He has been judged for the person he is, for the colour he holds, for his gender, for his culture, his sexual preference or the way he looks/speaks. He is someone who has been closeted about everything that he feels; he does not want to come out in the society just to be called names or be judged. I have shown a hyper lapse of a person doing repetitive things in front of a television. I have put a clock on the left bottom corner to give an idea about the passing of the time to the viewers. He is shown sitting alone, behind closed doors feeling lonely and unwanted. He is shown staring the television and doing things to kill time. The title that I have given to the last act is, “AFTERMATH”, which means the period following an event, such as an accident and the effects caused by the even. It basically shows the effects that the society has left on him.
I combined all the acts together at the end to show how heavy it looks when people go through everything simultaneously. How hard it is for a person to go through everything together, I wanted to make it look super heavy on the chest, just to give viewers an idea of how difficult it is for the person going through and feeling all of that.
