#9 Editing for Film

This was the first class of the second semester. We studied about various things. We were told about the things and editor has to keep in mind while making a film. The things included:

  • Always make a story board.
  • Use different transitions
  • Always think about editing before shooting

We were told about Different types of cuts & transitions:

  • Cross cut
  • Seamless editing (Cut action)
  • Matching cut
  • Dissolve (Usually used to show something disappearing from a place)
  • Fade in & Fade out
  • Smash cut (Abrupt shots) (From intense to quiet and vice versa
  • Many types of wipes (not used much)
  • Invisible cut
  • L-Cut: Makes an L with the audio and video - the audio of the video comes on later in another scene
  • J-Cut: The audio of the next scene comes first (Before you get to the position) (You hear what’s going on before you see what’s going on.

My personal favourite cuts are the Jump cuts and the J/L-Cuts
